Artist Statement
Kane Vestey, a fine art photographer based in the heart of Brisbane. His black and white urban photography strikes directly at the complexities of the human landscape, changing the familiar streets of Brisbane, Australia, into the unseen and untold narratives that are often missed.
Through his lived experience of being homeless in his late teens and now equipped with a decade of mental health nursing, Vestey has a deep understanding of the struggles within the concrete jungle. His empathy focuses through his lens, capturing the vulnerability, resilience, and hope in the urban environment, showing through the eyes of the homeless their day-to-day life and the mental health challenges they face.
Kane’s artistic vision and philosophy are based on practicing mindfulness, as he has developed a profound state of being present that goes beyond mere observation. This practice allows him to mentally connect with his surroundings on a deeply intuitive plane, fostering an infusion of creativity where he doesn't just see but truly becomes the perspective through his lens by heightened awareness. This approach allows him to see past the ordinary and mundane, capturing the emotions and subtle nuances that define the human condition within the environment.
Vestey’s artistic approach encompasses the power of monochrome to strip the essence of distraction, ripping away colour to focus on the raw emotions of buildings and people through unique compositions. The true passion is shown through each printed photograph using the highest standards of photo lab production, creating museum-quality prints, and using low-reflective glass that is set by the standards of art collectors and galleries.
Through his distinctive black and white photography, Kane Vestey aims to create impactful art, offering the view of the people experiencing homelessness and fostering an awareness of mental health within Brisbane’s monochrome metropolis.
